Although the weather may be getting warmer in many parts of the country, recent ‘bomb cyclones’ have brought freezing temperatures and weather to others. While everyone may bring in their plants to save them during a frost or might leave a faucet dripping to prevent pipes from freezing, few people might remember that their garage door can freeze shut. That can prove to be a hazard, especially when you need to get to work or there is an emergency and you need access to your vehicle. However, there are ways to keep your garage door from freezing shut as Kolo TV reports.
A garage door freezing shut is a pretty common occurrence and typically happens when snow melts and freezes, causing the door to become frozen. It can be an inconvenient thing to encounter during your morning rush.
There are ways, however, to prevent this from happening.
There are some commercially available lubricants that can help to prevent snow and ice from sticking to your garage door. Be careful, however, with what you choose to spray on the rubber weather seal. Some materials could cause the seal to deteriorate.
Another way is to leave the garage door open slightly. This prevents it from freezing to the concrete or the pavement of the driveway.
Yet another way is to install a garage heater which will keep the garage area warm enough – along with the door – that snow and ice will simply melt and not freeze.
You can also utilize the same trick that governments use to de-ice roadways and sprinkle salt along the line where your garage door meets your driveway.
These are just a few suggestions to help keep your garage door from freezing during the winter.
